Draft Strathalbyn district centre traffic, parking, streetscape plan revealed

A plan to significantly upgrade Strathalbyn’s retail heart has been given the nod by Alexandrina Council.

The draft Strathalbyn District Centre Traffic, Parking and Streetscape Plan, which focuses on traffic and streetscape improvements to better link Dawson and High Streets, was approved by council at its July 3 meeting.

The plan is open for public comment until July 28.

Alexandrina mayor Keith Parkes said council was planning to create more economic opportunities and to support existing and future businesses.

Strathalbyn is a growing, vibrant community.

“Alexandrina Council is committed to growing the heart of Strathalbyn,” Mr Parkes said.

“To ensure we get the best possible results, we take our lead from the Strathalbyn community.

“The community, via the 2014 Strathalbyn Town Plan process, has asked us to protect and strengthen the unique charm and character of Strathalbyn’s town centre, while creating bold and inspiring opportunities to increase regional wealth.”

At a public briefing held on Monday June 19, council heard from the consultant team engaged to deliver the traffic, parking and streetscape vision for Strathalbyn’s town centre.

The draft concepts build on feedback received during three days of community workshops held in March. More than 300 people attended a series of events at a temporary shop on Dawson Street staffed by the consultants and council representatives.

The key concepts involve Albyn Terrace, NAB Square, ‘Roundalls’ at Albyn Terrace/Dawson Street intersection, and a South Terrace crossing.

Mayor Parkes said the plan was considered by council on July 3 for release to the public for comment, including a consultation opportunity at a temporary “parklet” on July 12.

“We welcome feedback from our community and want to hear ideas about how these traffic, parking and streetscape concepts can be improved to activate the Strathalbyn town centre,” he said.

“These investigations are just one part of a multifaceted development plan amendment process council is pursuing in order to bring new life to Strathalbyn’s already vibrant heart.

“We want to ensure that full potential for development within the heart of the town is released so that even more people can discover and share Strathalbyn’s picturesque heritage streetscapes and unique charm.”
