The Mount Pleasant Men’s Shed is unique in that our shed has been built from the ground up by our members.
In November 2012 a like-minded group of men met to discuss the proposition of building a Men’s Shed in Mount Pleasant.
It was decided that a steering committee be formed Chaired by Bob Long to gauge the interest in the town, look for a property that would be suitable for a Men’s Shed and to formulate a plan to move forward.
Next month, the men’s shed will host the third Spanner in the Works? health check session.
All the men out there have heard the story about the old bull and the young bull. Sooner or later, even the old bulls realise that their stamina is waning and they may be in need of a health check.
The Australian Men’s Shed Association is conducting a series of free health checks, called Spanner in the Works?, to take place in participating Men’s Sheds across Australia.
The free health checks are designed to remind men that, like their cars, they also need a regular service. The initiative is open to all men, reinforcing the meaningful work that Men’s Sheds do for communities.
The Mount Pleasant Men’s Shed is presenting Spanner in the Works? #3, an expo style health workshop at the Mount Pleasant Soldiers Memorial Hall on Wednesday, October 4, with two starting times, 2.00pm and 5.30pm.
Spanner in the Works? #3 plays upon the idea that men often pay more attention to the health and wellbeing of their vehicles than their own health and wellbeing.
Like the old bull, many men remain reluctant to talk about their health and, too often, delay or avoid going to see a GP to get any potential problems checked out.
Nurses from the Mount Pleasant Hospital and a Doctor and Nurse from the Talunga Clinic will put you over the pits. A Chemist from Mount Pleasant Pharmacy will also be on hand to give advice on prescriptions and additives.
However, this check-up should not be seen as a replacement for a complete check-up by your GP and is more about encouraging men to start thinking about prevention and acting more pro-actively.
Spanner in the Works? #3 will have 15 information stalls delivering an array of low key men’s health material covering rattles and rumbles, aches and pains, dents and dings, fuel consumption and oil changes.
Come and get a free maintenance check from our Health mechanics. Visit the info stalls. Meet with some of the like-minded old bulls in our community. Tea and coffee will be available all day.
