Coonalpyn’s greatest draw card has thrust the township into the spotlight once again, landing it a nomination in the search for South Australia’s best main street.
Since the impressive mural on the town’s silos was revealed back in April, tourism has boomed, prompting Mainstreet SA to name Coonalpyn as one of five finalists.
The town’s section of the Dukes Highway will vie for the title of People’s Choice over Goodwood Road and Rundle Mall in Adelaide, Mount Barker Road in Stirling in the Adelaide Hills and Ocean Street in Victor Harbor.
Mainstreet SA acknowledged Coonalpyn had been nominated for its large-scale public artworks, including the now-famous 30-metre high mural of local school children on the five silo cells, which have reinvigorated local business along the highway.
Chair of Mainstreet SA Vivienne Holloway said the People’s Choice Choice Award was an opportunity for the public to celebrate mainstreets.
Voting is open until October 20 and to vote head to www.mainstreetsa.com.au.
