Staff from a number of country hospitals attended an event at the Gumeracha hospital on Friday, which acknowledged their part in the historic move of patients during the introduction of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Country Health SA chief executive officer Maree Geraghty said during the three-week ramp down some patients were transferred to rural hospitals such as Murray Bridge, Strathalbyn, Mount Pleasant, Gumeracha and Mount Barker.

“While the number of patient transfers was higher than we initially anticipated, our hospitals and staff were well prepared and well equipped to accept the extra patients during this once-in-a-century event,” she said.

“Patients were assessed and only transferred to country hospitals where appropriate, to receive ongoing care closer to home and their loved ones.

“I’d like to thank all of our doctors, nurses and allied health staff who worked tirelessly in the lead up to and during the ramp down, to ensure we provided the best possible patient care at all times.”
