The winner of Murraylands Animal Welfare Watch’s first annual kindness award has been named: Alex Emmins, of dog rescue service Scruffer Lovers.
Animal Welfare Watch’s Ruby Eckermann said Ms Emmins had received three separate nominations and was the standout winner for sure.
“Alex works tirelessly for companion animals around the Murraylands – cats, dogs and many more besides,” she said.
“Alex is well known amongst the community as a person who can be relied upon to help with rescues, to pick up strays, to obtain veterinary care, and to generally provide advice to anybody who needs it and assistance to any animal in distress or need.
“MAWW is thrilled to be able to highlight Alex as our first annual kindness award recipient and we place her up there as a role model for others.
“She sincerely cares about all animals – uses her time and energies and personal resources to create a better world for those without a voice.”
Through her rescue service, run out of her own pocket, she rescues dogs from local pounds or those surrendered by unwilling owners.
That work has occasionally led her to be abused and threatened, and has taken a toll on her health at times.
A number of other nominations were received, including two which Ruby said were particularly compelling.
Darren and Hayley at Furever Farm – “where the voiceless come to speak” – were singled out for providing love and care for unwanted and neglected farm animals.
Their self-financed, non-profit sanctuary has taken in countless animals and given them all the love and care they could need to live our their lives happily.
When those animals’ time comes, they are made as comfortable and pain-free as possible and not left alone.
A woman named Kathy was nominated for making a difference for cats and kittens, proving that all animals were worthy of love and proper care.
She catches cats, pays to have them de-sexed and looks after and feeds them until a new home can be found for them.
She also puts food and water out when she sees feral cats and kittens, despite having an allergy to the animals.
