Exercise more, eat healthy in the Murraylands

Seems simple right? For some this may be the case, but for many families with hectic work and school schedules this can be more difficult.

In the ideal world, would our community look bright and vibrant and contain happy, healthy and engaged people? I’m guessing your answer is YES … it sure would!

With more people sitting than ever before, the Mid Murray Council is providing opportunities which encourages local kids and families to get outdoors more and choose healthier foods.

Why not take advantage of the warm weather and take a dip in one of the pools at Cambrai or Mannum, grab the dog, round up the kids and head out for a walk at one of our many stunning reserves.

Do you want to feel better, live longer and contribute by being a positive role model to our younger generation? Why not swap a wrapper food for a fresh piece of fruit or a vegetable next time you need a snack.

Just last week, local students across Mid Murray schools began their venture to go ‘wrapper free’, swapping wrapper foods for fresh foods in their school lunchbox.

Through a series of initiatives lead by OPAL, in partnership with principals, local including goal setting, video making, creative education and awareness, local kids are improving their healthy eating attitude and behaviours. 

The project, titled Fresh Frenzy, was developed in response to survey data from 350 students, parents and teachers in the Mid Murray, who identified wrapper foods were sneaking into school lunchboxes.

With trails becoming more popular, Mid Murray is stepping ahead, in partnership with the Rural City of Murray Bridge and Coorong Council, to bring recreation and tourism opportunities to our region.

Stage 1 of the Murray Coorong Trail is well underway and you may have noticed the new facelift at the Cowirra levee bank.

If you haven’t, it’s well worth the stroll, bike ride or jog along the banks of the Murray. This area is all inclusive and also accessible to wheelchairs, gophers and prams, so pop on your hat and sunscreen on and slot it at the top of your priority list.

Next time you turn on the television or rip open a food wrapper, I challenge you to ask yourself the question – have you achieve half an hour of exercise today, did you reach your 10,000 steps and have you consumed two fruits or five serves of vegetables today?
