The 2018 South Australian Masters Games will begin with a street party in the heart of Murray Bridge this Friday.

Sixth Street and a section of Bridge Street will close between 4.30 and 9pm for food, entertainment and family activities.

The event will begin with a parade of athletes and a “masters mile” race.

Former The Voice contestant Tib Horvath’s cover band, the Gate Crashes, will provide a soundtrack filled with party anthems past and present for the rest of the evening.

Adelaide 36ers great Mark Davis and former Australian netball captain Michelle den Dekker will host a three-on-three street basketball competition.

For children there will be face painters, sumo suits and a free rock climbing wall.

Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis invited everyone to join in the festivities.

“The theme (of the games) is ‘come and give it a go’ and is an invitation to the community to not just attend the opening ceremony but to become involved,” he said.

“The opening ceremony … will celebrate not only the participants of the games but will also display the hospitality of the Murray Bridge community.

“Excellent food, fantastic entertainment and kids’ activities and a focus on fun for the whole family will make the Sixth Street party the highlight of this year’s event calendar and I invite you to bring along your friends and family.

“Entry is free and the weather forecast is looking good.”

It was also important for Murray Bridge to make a good first impression by welcoming the hundreds of athletes expected to visit, he said.
