Palmer hosts Rockarama 2018, SA Metal Detecting Championships | PHOTOS, VIDEO

More than 100 gem, mineral and metal-detecting enthusiasts have descended on Palmer for the town’s annual Rockarama festival and the South Australian Metal-Detecting Championships.

The oval was covered with tents and caravans for the event, halls and tables were filled with displays, Country Fire Service volunteers and Scouts cooked barbecues, and Palmer Gem and Mineral Club members sold raffle tickets for their annual fundraising drive.

Among the highlights of the weekend was the metal-detecting contest, in which dozens of people raced to find 20 prizes attached to metal items buried in a field.

Their task was made more difficult by the presence of thousands of other metallic items, including leftover prizes from previous years of competition.

Organiser Kym Loechel said fewer than 10 per cent of the objects hidden in the field were found every year.

“But I don’t know if the machines are getting better or (competitors) are getting better, but they have found more this time,” he said.
