Ngarrindjeri elder Major "Moogy" Sumner will run in an upcoming federal by-election to save the River Murray and represent his community, he says.

The founder of the Tal-kin-jeri dance group will contest the Mayo poll for the Greens against former Nick Xenophon Team MP Rebekha Sharkie and star Liberal candidate Georgina Downer, daughter of long-serving MP Alexander.

Candidates from other parties, including Labor, have not yet been announced.

Mr Sumner said voters needed something different in Canberra if they wanted things to change.

"Now is the time to speak up to protect the environment and help care for people," he said.

“There are too many corporations like Cubbie Station taking more water than they need, and the Coorong and the Murray Darling are suffering.

"We all have a part to play in looking after our environment, living sustainably together, and doing what’s right."

If successful, he would be the first Aboriginal person to represent South Australia in federal Parliament.
