On Wednesday June 6 the Inner Wheel Club of Mobilong hosted a meeting of all clubs in the South Australian District A70, at the Murray Heights Retirement Village.
After the meeting and a light lunch members moved to the Local Government Centre and planted three ‘Gift of Friendship’ roses.
The red rose is one symbol of Inner Wheel and this rose has been developed especially to raise money for their ongoing support into Cord Blood Research.
Mayor Brenton Lewis planted the first rose and in his speech he commented on the value that service cubs provide to the District. He mentioned projects that have been done by them and in particular some completed by this Inner Wheel Club.
Inner Wheel District Chairman Rosalie De Laurent spoke about how the red rose came to be a symbol for IW.
It was started in a small way by a club in Sweden and in 1964 the idea was taken up by a Danish President when she attended an international meeting in England and presented a red rose to each district representative.
The ‘Red Rose of Friendship’ is now a symbol for IW Australia wide.
The roses planted in front of our LGC were developed as part of a fundraising campaign for the ongoing support into cord blood research.
Inner Wheel is proud to assist the medical breakthroughs that are being brought about by these explorations.
Mobilong President Joyce Medlow said that ‘Mobilong’ was the Ngarrindjeri word that means ‘Haven of the Birds’ and was therefore a very appropriate name for our ladies club that draws its membership from this district.
The club was started here 33 years ago, meets on the second Thursday of each month for a dinner meeting and has a current membership of twenty five, six of whom are original members.
An information plaque indicating the co-operation of Inner Wheel and the Rural City of Murray Bridge in this venture was unveiled by Mobilong Inner Wheel current president Joyce Medlow and incoming president Kay Haig.
She then thanked the Mayor, staff and our most helpful Council Manager of City Assets for their generous co-operation in this event.
