Supercars revved their way into Tailem Bend on the weekend for the Bend Motorsport Park’s inaugural OTR SuperSprint event with the number of visitors who made their way to the park for the race exceeding expectations.
Coorong District council director corporate and community Nat Traeger reported council anticipated over 30,000 people would make their way to The Bend, but the number came closer to 40,000 to 50,000 people.

“Council are still in the process of collecting feedback and consulting with local businesses in terms of their experience of the weekend,” Ms Traeger said.
Ms Traeger said the council liaised with local businesses in the lead up and said excitement built in town ahead of the race. “The vibe in town on the Thursday was really strong,” she said.
“Having the race drivers come in and visit local business created a real buzz and the flow on effect in the region was great, with some of the drivers signing autographs in Murray Bridge the night before the event.”
Ms Traeger said the council had provided a list of key contacts on their Facebook page for race goers to get in touch with if they faced any issues over the weekend.
“We didn’t get inundated with calls over the weekend and from council’s point of view it is a good sign that the event ran smoothly.”
Ms Traeger said discussions would commence with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure how to address road issues.
“Any major event is really going to test some of the infrastructure and people were using every road, heading out any which way that they could once the race had finished,” she said.
Station manager at the Tailem Bend Visitor Information Centre, Raylene Thomas, said the centre was “flat-out” over the weekend.
“Of the 70 people who came through on Saturday at least 40 inquired how to actually get out to the track,” she said.
“The feedback we received was really positive and people praised the facility.
“However, some people who stopped past again on their way back through said a little bit more work could be done on the roads.”
