Murray Bridge RSL conducted a commemorative service on Saturday 18th August 2018 for veterans of the Vietnam War, and particularly those who fought in the Battle of Long Tan.
The service was attended by about 60 veterans and their families and concluded with Noel and Karen Kneebone singing the Vietnam War “anthem,” I was only 19.”
After the service veterans stayed for a few drinks and nibbles provided by the RSL. Three local lads who had all been called up for National Service renewed friendships and realised it was exactly 50 years and 1 month to the day they had left Adelaide to start their military training, which ended in a 12 month tour of South Vietnam.
In the colour picture taken on Saturday 18th August, Moss Buchanan (L) chats with Graham Fromm (C) and Denis Hicks (R) about their experiences during the war.
The black and white picture, taken by the Advertiser at Keswick Barracks on 18th July 1968 shows Moss from Murray Bridge, Graham from Walker Flat and Denis from Jervois having their first “cuppa” courtesy of the Australian Army. Moss served as an infantry rifleman, Graham as an engineer and Denis as a transport driver.
