Tailem Bend duo Zadow and Thomas win River Murray junior best and fairest awards

Tailem Bend duo Blake Zadow and Lachlan Thomas were crowned the River Murray Football League’s best and fairest juniors at the association’s presentation on Monday night, September 3.


Eagle Blake Zadow won the Connolly Medal as the league’s under 17.5 best and fairest on 29 votes ahead of Mannum’s Mitchell Heward on 26 votes.

At round seven, Zadow was third in the count behind Heward on 13 and Imperials’ Lachlan Marsh on eight votes.

After round 12, Heward was still in front with 21 votes ahead of Zadow on 16.

At the end of round 15, Zadow and Heward were tying on 22 votes and Zadow powered home to claim the medal, three votes ahead of Heward.

Zadow thanked his family and paid tribute to his Tailem Bend Football Club team-mates and runner-up Heward.

He also thanked league president Terry Connolly who presented the award.

Tailem Bend under 15 star Lachlan Thomas won the Bryan Medal on 31 votes ahead of Mypolonga’s Jordan Hein on 29 votes.

Thomas has had an outstanding season and also took out the under 15 leading goal kicker award.

Thomas started the count well and by round seven had 12 votes and was leading Ramblers’ Kane Catford who was on nine and Tailem Bend’s Ned Hughes on eight.

After round 12, Thomas was leading on 20 with Catford and Hein not far away on 16 votes with Tailem Bend’s Lachlan Appledore in touch with 14 votes.

With four rounds to go, Thomas and Hein were tied on 23 votes with Catford not far behind on 20 votes.

The count went right down to the last round, with Hein leading heading into the last round with 29 votes.

However, Thomas polled three in the last round to win by two votes with 31.

The humble midfielder thanked his parents, his coach and the Tailem Bend Football Club and said his focus was on his side’s finals campaign that starts this Saturday.

“I’m honoured, it is a privilege to be recognised …  football is a team game and individual awards are nice but I hope we can get some success (in finals),” Thomas said.
