Men and women of all ages and backgrounds are being encouraged to run for their local council, with the two-week nomination period starting September 4.

Local Government Association president Sue Clearihan said increasing the diversity of the local government sector was a focus for the association and its members.

Nominations are open and close at 12pm on Tuesday, September 18.

Voting in the 2018 council elections will be via postal ballot, with ballot papers distributed in the week commencing October 22.

Councillors are eligible for an annual allowance determined by the Remuneration Tribunal of South Australia.

In Murray Bridge or Alexandrina, the amount is $17,270; in the Mid Murray district, $13,900; in the Coorong, $9900; and in Karoonda East Murray or the Southern Mallee, $6500.

Mayors receive an allowance four times greater, and deputy mayors an allowance 25 per cent greater.

An extra allowance is also payable to councillors who live more than 30 kilometres from their district’s main council office.
