'We take great pride in offering all students in our Agriculture program...the opportunity to attend the Royal Adelaide Show,' says Phil Roberts

Show Report September 2018

Coomandook Area School has a tradition steeped in Agriculture which continues to grow and go from strength to strength! This year has been another excellent example of this, and it is all attributed to the work of the students, staff and local farmers.

While Agriculture is taught to students all students at Coomandook, from Reception to Year twelve, it is the year six to twelve students who have recently shot Coomandook to the top of the Royal Adelaide Show rankings again.

This year students exhibited 5 steers, 6 goats, 3 merino wethers and 6 pigs in the Royal Adelaide Show schools category. Students from Years 6 to 9 have been preparing the goats and pigs, while students from Years 10 to 12 helped with the sheep and steers.

“We take great pride in offering all students in our Agriculture program from years six to twelve the opportunity to attend the Royal Adelaide Show” said Agriculture teacher Phil Roberts.

“It is not unusual for us to have a group of close to 50 students working between our exhibits and demonstrating to South Australia what a small country school can achieve.”

This year the results have again spoken for themselves with Coomandook taking away three broad ribbons and a swag of other accolades.

Along with four other ribbons the Coomandook Goat Team walked away with Reserve Champion Lightweight Wether on Hoof which absolutely thrilled all students who had been working with the goats.

Staff and students were delighted with the results of two steers placing in the on hoof awards while at the show but were totally blown away by the hook awards where their Binnowie Downs Angus, Nigel, was awarded Champion Light Domestic Steer on Hook and then again with their Oak Downs Poll Hereford, Nugget, being awarded Reserve Champion Export steer on Hook.

These amazing achievements could not be reached without the support from the following farming families and we would like to acknowledge and thank them for their continued support of our Agriculture programme.
