With a review of the state’s sentencing discount scheme under way, community members are encouraged to take the opportunity to have their say.
The current scheme allows offenders to get a reduced sentence in exchange for an early guilty plea and the state government has commissioned Brian Martin AO QC to undertake the review.
Attorney-General Vicki Chapman said sentencing is a complex task, and that many competing factors needed to be considered.
“Early guilty pleas are important – they can save court resources for matters that genuinely need them,” Ms Chapman said.
“But, more importantly, they can help spare victims of serious crime and others the trauma of appearing in court to testify.”
