A long standing dental hygiene serviced for patients in aged care will continue to flourish as Wendy Sih hands the reigns over to Lynda van Adringhem.
Under the ‘Better Oral Care in Residential Aged Care’ free dental program, Wendy Sih has assisted Riverview Dental’s Doctor Michael Moran to deliver free dental services to the region’s aged community.
Wendy has been tending to patients since 2009 and in the last four years alone she has clocked up 120 visits to six nursing homes in the Murraylands including Resthaven, Lerwin, Jallarah and Aminya, where she has cleaned and desensitised the mouths of over 600 residents.
“I have loved every minute of my time with our older residents and was reluctant to retire, worried that the service would finish,” Wendy said.
“This is the only free dental service to residents in nursing homes in country SA.
“I really didn’t want to have it end.”
This is where Lynda stepped in and Wendy said she is extremely grateful to have someone as passionate as her to take over the role.
“I am thrilled that Lynda has a heart for country service and the skills needed to continue this rewarding but difficult work,” she said.
“Good oral care matters, especially in old age, when gum infection and pain can take all the pleasure out of eating.”
Lynda said she looked forward to learning from Wendy and was delighted to take over from the work.
“I am really please to be taking on the role and to be learning from Wendy,” Lynda said.
“It’s something I really want to keep continuing with because it is such a valuable service.”
Wendy added that the private dentist program, funded by SADS (South Australian Dental Scheme), began as a pilot program which experienced such success in improving the oral care outcomes of residents that it has continued, despite funding cuts.
“Only the dentists who signed up for the original pilot scheme have been able to continue under this funding. Dr Moran is the only dentist in country SA under this scheme.”
