Friday, February 15 was a cruise night with a difference for Auto Collectors Club of Murray Bridge (ACCMB) members. It was dubbed “the mystery cruise” by organising ACCMB life members Maureen and Graham Edwards and, as usual, was a mystery. With 23 cars and 44 members awaiting instructions and the long-awaited removal of the veil of secrecy, one member by the name of “Wadey” was heard to say, “thank God, I will soon finally be able to sleep again”, followed by laughter from ACCMB members as Maureen handed out the mystery directions for where to go. Mr Edwards, the cruise director, said hi to all the gathering at the ACCMB clubrooms and announced the details for the short cruise, and at 5pm on the bell it was time to hit the road. Members departed the clubrooms, turned right onto Adelaide Road, went down to the main street traffic lights and right along Swanport Road before winding their way out past the new Gifford Hill racecourse and along the Old Swanport Road and Bremer Road, past the Mobilong Prison, Murray Bridge sale yards and through the back streets before completing the 25-kilometre cruise at the Edwards’ household, where members parked their vehicles in the adjacent block next door courtesy of Bev and Rob Magor. It was amazing the number of ACCMB members who hadn’t travelled and seen some of the sights along the way during the cruise ACCMB members, complete with all BYO utensils, found their way into the Edwards’ manicured back yard and patio area with its elks, staghorns, ferns and many other plant varieties, complete with a working Douglas hand water pump trickling over a variety of shells in the corner. Members set up their tables and chairs around the garden, while Mr Edwards welcomed all members, including new and first time cruise members Kylie and Robert Allen along with Helen and Adrian Pergallini, to the gathering. Following a BYO tea and relaxed chatting, members were treated to a viewing of past family memorabilia collected by Mr and Mrs Edwards before members said their thank yous and goodbyes, expressing to their hosts what a great cruise with a difference it had been for the ACCMB. The next ACCMB meeting will be held at the combined clubrooms, Johnstone Park, Murray Bridge on March 5 at 8pm. Prospective members are most welcome.
