Balloons were sat on and burst, then women had to speak for one minute on the message they found inside – once they got over the fright.

This was the first step in a recent University of the Third Age (U3A) course encouraging women to be confident when speaking in front of a group.

Facilitators Sharon Pickering and Dee Loch of Strathalbyn Speaking Made Easy spoke on how to achieve confidence despite fear.

Members were also asked to find matching name tags and introduce their new “friends”, which gave all the opportunity to learn more about each other.

As a finale, Jackie Mussared, also from the Strathalbyn group, gave a speech which illustrated various aspects of a good speech.

She talked about the hilarious situations when teaching her children how to drive, including stalling several times at intersections; she taught them with patience and laughter.

The U3A course will involve two more meetings: “Planning and structuring your speech” in March and “how to present your speech" in April.
