They don't wear capes and they do their best work behind the scenes, but now it's time for the Coorong's local heroes to shine.

Do you know someone who goes above and beyond to help out the Coorong community?

The Coorong District Council wants to put them in the spotlight to celebrate the tireless work of the district's volunteers at its annual Volunteer Recognition Event in Tailem Bend on May 28.

Nominations are now open for the council's Unsung Hero Award - an accolade that recognises the efforts of locals who help to make their community a better place to live.

Coorong District Council mayor Paul Simmons said volunteering was the lifeblood of Coorong communities, but it could also be a thankless task.

"From sports coaches to gardeners, running the local hall to helping out those in need, volunteering is part of the fabric of our Coorong communities," he said.

"Many of our residents step up to share their skills, time and knowledge in so many ways that improve the lives of those around them.

"Through their generosity our communities are stronger, healthier and better connected and our towns and our environment are made more beautiful, enjoyable places to live and explore.

"The contribution of our volunteers is invaluable and that's why it's so important to celebrate the exceptional work they do and their commitment to their community."
