Winter's icy touch inspires Murraylands, Mallee photographers

Winter has held the Murraylands and Mallee tightly in its grip lately, including on the region's coldest night of 2019.

The mercury fell to two degrees below zero at Murray Bridge before dawn on Monday, or -3.6C at Pallamana.

Other towns also froze, according to the Bureau of Meteorology: it was -1.6C at Karoonda, -1.4C at Lameroo and -0.4C at Strathalbyn.

NRM weather stations recorded minima of -4.3C at Caurnamont and -4.2C at Tintinara, and showed those two centres, and Wilkawatt, had shivered through sub-zero temperatures for six straight nights.

The chill was bracing for anyone unfortunate enough to have to get up and about early, but it also produced unusually beautiful winter scenes as birdbaths froze, lawns frosted over and mist rolled down the river.

Dozens of photographers sent their snaps to The Murray Valley Standard.
