Repairs to Karoonda's swimming pool are likely to begin this summer, according to the Department of Education.
The pool, located on the grounds of Karoonda Area School, has been out of action since 2014.
But the department said a builder would be engaged for the project by the end of this year.
While the estimated cost of repairs "currently exceeds the available budget of $1.4 million", a spokeswoman said the department would work with the school and other government departments on an acceptable compromise that would be able to progress.
The Karoonda East Murray council last month allocated $210,000 to the project in its draft 2019-20 budget.
