A police chase on the Dukes Highway has led to the arrest of a 33-year-old man from Reynella.

Just after 9.30pm on Friday, the man's car was allegedly detected speeding on Granites Road, Tailem Bend.

Police initially gave chase, but called off their pursuit for safety reasons as the man sped southeast along the highway.

The man allegedly swerved onto the wrong side of the highway in an attempt to hit a police car, which was able to steer out of the way.

About 10.30pm the car stopped about five kilometres past Coonalpyn and officers arrested the man.

He was charged with aggravated endangering life, driving dangerously to avoid police, and speeding; denied bail; and ordered to face court in Murray Bridge.

Anyone with dash cam footage of the speeding car, or other information, should contract Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
