Police want to speak with a woman who witnessed a man hold up a Murray Bridge newsagency with a machete on Thursday.

The man entered the Southside Newsagency and Licensed Post Office around 5.15pm on Thursday and allegedly threatened, but did not physically injure, a staff member.

He escaped with cash and was last seen running down the neighbouring side street, Robe Street, towards Swanport Road.

Police searched the area but were unable to find him.

The man is described as slim and 175 centimetres tall, or five foot nine.

He was wearing a grey hooded jumper with a black circle motif on the front, black tracksuit pants, blue sneakers, black gloves, dark sunglasses and a scarf over his face.

Officers hope to speak with the woman who was in the newsagency at the time, accompanied by two children; as well as to two men just outside who may have seen the man running off.

Those witnesses had not come forward by Saturday, SA Police said.
