No serious injuries have been reported after two cars collided head-on right in front of police between Tailem Bend and Meningie this afternoon.

Two police officers on motorbikes had pulled over at Ashville around 12.45pm to help a motorist whose caravan had lost a wheel.

As they stood on the side of the Princes Highway, two cars then collided head-on, and one spun off and crashed into one of the police motorbikes.

Neither the cars' drivers, the police officers nor the caravan owner was seriously hurt.

However, both cars and the motorbike needed to be towed.

The highway remains open, but a lower speed limit will apply until the wreckage is cleared.
