Police have arrested a man who allegedly led them on a chase from Adelaide's western suburbs to Murray Bridge overnight.

Officers tried to stop a silver Audi station wagon on Tapleys Hill Road at Seaton just after midnight, as it had been reported stolen from Henley Beach on Saturday night.

The driver allegedly refused to stop and sped off along Grange Road.

Police gave chase for about 10 minutes but pulled back near Richmond Road at Marleston.

The police helicopter soon spotted the car driving through back streets in Unley and Fullarton, then tracked it up the South Eastern Freeway to Murray Bridge, where officers who laid road spikes managed to stop it and arrest the driver.

The 20-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle, aggravated engaging in a police pursuit, dangerous driving, speeding, driving on an expired licence and resisting arrest.

He was expected to face court in Murray Bridge today.
