Ready to go: Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes is excited about the upcoming development of the Strathalbyn senior citizens building.

An exciting new project that will provide a dedicated centre for Strathalbyn to run community development programs is set to begin construction this month.

The Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Building redevelopment has been three years in the making, after discussions initially commenced between the Alexandrina Council, Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Club and the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre in 2016.

From this initial meeting, an idea developed to co-locate both community groups within the Senior Citizens Building and create a collaborative community centre that supports local and surrounding residents.

To accommodate this, a redevelopment of the building will be required to improve the centre's functionality.

Upgrades will include a full renovation of the existing kitchen and the development of an accessible toilet; as well as a new extension to provide dedicated office and meeting spaces.

In mid-2018, consultants were engaged by council to prepare concept plans, with final designs approved following extensive liaison with all stakeholders.

Alexandrina mayor Keith Parkes said he was pleased that the construction phase was ready to progress.

"The redevelopment of the Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Building will provide two of our prominent community groups the base and facilities they need to provide their much needed services to the Strathalbyn community well into the future," Mr Parkes said,

"Both groups are pivotal to the region and for many years have facilitated social interaction, access to programs and much needed support to our people.

"We look forward to following progress of the redevelopment and presenting a facility later this year that will serve the groups' needs for many years to come."

The Senior Citizens Club Strathalbyn was formed in 1966 to support senior community members.

Since 1977, it has been operating from a council-owned building in Parker Avenue, Strathalbyn.

The Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre is a not-for-profit community organisation established in 2014 that provides information, and social and community programs and services to the residents of the Strathalbyn district.
