Mypolonga is home to some of South Australia's finest olive oil, if the Premier's Food and Beverage Industry Awards are anything to go by.

Rio Vista Olives is a finalist in the Business Excellence and Primary Producer categories in the 2020 awards, which celebrate the success of a wide range of emerging and established South Australian businesses.

The family-owned and operated business grows olives at three groves at Mypolonga and a fourth grove near Mount Torrens, in the Adelaide Hills.

Processing, bottling and storage also takes place at Mypolonga.

They make extra virgin olive oil, with a strong focus on single varieties.

Rio Vista general manager and head miller Jared Bettio said the business has been focused on creating premium oils since it started four years ago.

"We've been putting international-standard systems into place from the word go, and it's making the difference; it ensures the quality," he said.

A combination of good climate conditions, readily-available irrigation, and the soil made Mypolonga a prime place to make their products.

"At Mypolonga, it's sandy but with a bit of clay, and it holds the nutrients," he said.

He said it was the first time his business had entered the awards, and being named a finalist was a great surprise.

"I didn't know what to expect; being a small business, you don't expect to challenge (bigger businesses)," he said.

"It's the best year we've had."

This month, Rio Vista Olives received 12 gold medals and best agrumato/flavoured oil of show at the Australian International Olive Awards.

Earlier this year, they received three gold medals, four silver medals and three Best in Show awards, including the coveted Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil of show, at the Australia-wide Royal Adelaide Olive Awards.

The Premier's Food and Beverage Industry Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday, November 13 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
