There are six registered Clean Up Australia Day events across the Murraylands and Mallee, and locals are encouraged to join one.

Murray Bridge, Tailem Bend, Lameroo, and Walker Flat all have clean ups registered on the Clean Up Australia Day website.

Sandy Douglas is organising one of the Tailem Bend clean-ups, scheduled for this Sunday, for the third year running.

She had noticed rubbish had begun building up around Railway Terrace over the last few years and decided to do something about it.

"I love the town, and instead of complaining about there being rubbish, I thought we can get out and pick it up," she said.

During last year's clean up, most of the rubbish collected was packaging from fast food restaurants, single-use coffee cups, and hand and baby wipes.

Mischief and Mayhem the Naughty Elves, who helped with Tailem Bend's Christmas celebrations last year, got a head-start on the clean-up at the playground on Sunday.

Sandy hoped fellow community members would follow the elves' lead and join her to tidy up the town.

"If people have an area they walk in, or their street, or an area where they know rubbish is dumped, they can clean there," she said.

"It's a great idea to get the community together and take responsibility for the town."

Clean Up Australia chair Pip Kiernan said in an effort to keep COVID-Safe, there had been a surge in single-use, disposable items like coffee cups, food wrappers, masks, and sanitiser wipes, but unfortunately they had polluted local environments.

She said Clean Up Australia Day was the perfect time to step up and make a difference.

"This year has seen disruption to our lives, not least of all to our local environments which have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items," she said.

"By planning ahead and signing up to a Clean Up event, you are making a pledge to help conserve the environment for the long-term future, and taking an important action by stepping up for your community."
