The Strathalbyn Pool is yet to open after an underground water leak damaged the embankment of the River Angas.

In a statement, an Alexandrina Council spokesperson said staff identified the source of the leak and were working to find a fix.

"The affected underground line is associated with the disposal of water from the pool area," the spokesperson said.

"To reconfirm, the pool structure and internal pipework is all in working order."

The leak has meant the start of the pool's operating season, which normally runs from October to April has been pushed back - but a new opening date has not yet been set.

"We hope to have our Strathalbyn swimming community back in the pool very soon," the spokesperson said.

"We continue to thank the community for your patience to ensure the safety of this area."

The issue could potentially put an end to the possibility of opening the pool for 10 months instead of the usual six, which was raised at the council's August meeting.

The 50-metre, six-lane outdoor pool located in the heart of Strathalbyn has been managed on behalf of the Alexandrina Council by YMCA South Australia for the past nine years.

In April, the council received a 268-signature petition asking to consider extending the operating season of the swimming pool to 10 months per year.

During the 2019-20 financial year - which was impacted by COVID-19 closures - the pool had 17,688 attendees at a cost of $17.43 per visit and maintained a net operating loss of $308,370.

The council predicted an increased operating deficit of $101,533 if the pool was open for four more months.

At the August meeting, councillors agreed to consider an extension of operating hours as part of 2022-23 budget deliberations and investigate options to enclose the pool.
