As his family and friends rambunctiously celebrated, at pick 34 this Langhorne Creek football star's AFL dreams all came true.
Thursday, November 25, 2021 Langhorne Creek's Matthew Roberts who plays for South Adelaide Football Club was selected in the AFL Draft by the Sydney Swans.
The forward/midfielder's family and friends pounced on him in sheer delight as his name was read out to the country.
"It was a surreal feeling to hear my name called out to be drafted into the AFL," Roberts said.
"It was amazing to have all my close mates and family there to celebrate that special moment. It only happens once and it was just awesome.
"I'm really stoked for the opportunity and can't wait to get stuck into it with the Sydney Swans."
Honing his game in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Roberts said that the league helped develop him into the player that he is today.
"GSFL had a massive influence on my footy," Roberts said.
"I started at a real young age, playing two games on a Saturday morning for Langhorne Creek playing upper grade, that really helped fast track my development.
"From playing two games a week always against bigger bodies, it's definitely going to help me."
Roberts is very passionate about his hometown and couldn't thank the community for all their support.
"Langhorne Creek is definitely my home," he said.
"It's somewhere I will always feel at home. It's a place that I feel really comfortable in and I'm really grateful to the whole Langhorne Creek community for all their support over the years and always backing me.
"I had my dad Brenton as my coach for a while. He's a really big influence on me. He was really stoked on draft night.
"Matty Tonkin, my junior Colts coach. We won a junior Colt flag together in 2016. He was a key part in my development.
"Randall Follett in senior Colts, Clint Godwin in the A grades and all the senior boys. There are a lot of people I need to thank. I've had a lot of mentors from Langhorne Creek."
The AFL Draft may be a huge milestone in Roberts life, but he'll have to now leave behind potential finals glory at the Strathalbyn Cricket Club.
"I'd love to see if they could sneak me in for a cheeky game," Roberts laughed.
"But, sadly I probably won't be allowed to. I hope they get the win though."
Roberts will be heading to NSW to join the Sydney Swans on Sunday, November 28.
